Contrast

This is another image taken on my recent trip to Stockholm. I have a fascination for doors and windows, especially when they contrast with the sky. In Sweden we were lucky to have bright, blue skies most of the time (don’t get too jealous, it was below ten degrees mostly). Combine this with a polarising filter and the right time of day and you get this really neat contrast between the roof and the sky.

Swedish Spring

There are a few pictures that I took when I was in Stockholm that I didn’t include in that blog because they’re not really of Sweden even though that’s exactly where they were taken. This is the first of, well, a few. I think it nicely conjures up thoughts of spring and the coming of summer.

French Friday

This weeks PhotoFriday theme is “Grandmother” and, unfortunately, I don’t have a suitable image this time. But please vote for my entry in last weeks challenge, “Extreme Closeup.” I’m entry number 180.

Instead here is a picture that I really like that I’ve not shown off as much as I should have done! It was taken in Sospel, France. This was the view from the front of the hotel we were staying in. My friend got this view, my room was looking out over a shed at the back.

Canon EOS 50D

In the end it was the reliability that did it. Over the last few months my trusty 300D has been coming up with odd errors, refusing to recognise memory cards and generally getting cantankerous. Luckily I have always been able to coax it back to life but in the end the thought of travelling somewhere and have it fail became more painful than the anticipated hole in my bank account.

Icicles

In south-west London the snow of the past few days has given way to grey skies and rain, and the snow that still lies on the ground is more icy than crisp. I much preferred the snow.

Still, the melting allowed for photographs like the above. This is actually a shot through my living room window.

Drunk Snowman

Most readers will be aware that here in London we’re experiencing the worst winter for many years. We woke up this morning with a layer of snow that went past my ankle, which, sure, isn’t going to get any Norwegians worrying but is quite dramatic by SW19 standards.

Unlike many people, I actually made it into the office but, rather than get stranded there, I came home at lunch time and took a few pictures before sitting back in front of my laptop.

Lena

Lena

Like most people, most of my photography tends to happen when I travel. I do like to branch out from time to time though, this time into portrait photography. This picture is from my first (and currently only) experience in a studio and is of a model called Lena. She was professional, fun and very keen on motor racing.

This is a cropped version of the original. I usually use the full-size, black and white version which is not suitable for work.

Photo Book Test Results: YoPhoto

This is the second of a two-part article about YoPhoto’s photo book printing service. Previously I wrote about the authoring software and the ordering experience. Here I will go into more detail about the finished product.

I placed the order on Saturday 8th March. The dispatch notice arrived at lunchtime on Tuesday 11th and the book arrived on the next day. After waiting two weeks for some of the previous photo books it is refreshing to have this one in my hands less than three working days after placing the order.
